About the Cost of Ceramic Restorations ― Why Such a Big Difference?
The Most Frequent Inquiry: “Price”
In our daily practice, the most common question we receive from patients is about the cost of ceramic restorations.
Many are interested in the white, beautiful appearance of ceramic treatments, but they wonder:
- How much does it cost?
- Why do prices vary so much between clinics?
- Is it too cheap to be trustworthy, or too expensive to be a rip-off?
These are very common concerns.
As a result, some patients end up in a situation we call “doctor shopping” (getting lost in choosing a clinic).
Ceramic is Private Treatment
First, as a basic premise, ceramic is not included as an option in insurance-covered treatment.
Because it is private treatment, both the pricing and the naming are left to the discretion of each clinic.
This is where the pitfall lies.
The Trap of the Name “Hybrid Ceramic”
For example, there is a type of crown called “hybrid ceramic.”
The name “ceramic” and the term ‘hybrid’ might evoke images of automobiles and give the impression of something high-quality.
However, strictly speaking, this is not ceramic; it is classified as reinforced resin.
- It falls short in areas where ceramic excels, such as being “stain-resistant” and having “good cleanability.”
- Its strength may also be insufficient in some cases.
Therefore, from a long-term perspective, it is not a suitable substitute for ceramic.
Nevertheless, it is widely available as an “affordable white material,” occupying the “mid-range” position in the typical “pine, bamboo, plum” pricing structure.
Our clinic prioritizes long-term stability and therefore does not offer it as an out-of-pocket treatment option.
Reasons for Price Variation
Why do costs vary significantly between clinics for treatments all labeled “ceramic”?
The main reasons are as follows:
- Regional Market Conditions (Differences exist between urban centers and rural areas)
- Differences in dental labs (Variations in technicians’ skill levels and pricing)
- Doctor’s technical fees (Vary based on treatment precision and associated equipment)
- Rising material costs (Increases in recent years for imported materials and metals)
Personally, when I received treatment from a certain doctor, I had ceramic restorations placed at just under ¥400,000 per tooth.
Furthermore, there are actually doctors in Tokyo offering treatments priced at over ¥1,000,000 per tooth.
Our Clinic’s Approach
Our clinic also sets prices slightly higher than the local average.
The reason is simple:
- We prioritize
- the rising costs of materials and dental lab fees
- the introduction of the latest equipment to ensure precision
and the thorough implementation of treatments using rubber dam isolation, magnifying glasses, and microscopes.
Rather than “selling on price,” we prioritize providing treatments that offer long-term stability and durability.
Summary
- Ceramic crowns are private treatments, so prices vary by clinic
- “Hybrid Ceramic” is actually reinforced resin, which may lack long-term stability.
- Price differences stem from multiple factors: location, lab, doctor’s skill, material costs, etc.
- Our clinic prioritizes treatment you can trust long-term over short-term affordability.
If you’re considering ceramic treatment, it’s crucial to check not just the price, but also “what materials are used and what treatment approach is taken.”
