Why Our Clinic Uses Microscopes
What is a Microscope?
In recent years, one piece of equipment increasingly seen even in newly opened dental clinics is the microscope.
It is essentially a “dental surgical microscope,” a device that magnifies areas difficult to see with the naked eye or a loupe, enabling precise treatment.
Our clinic has actually used it as standard equipment since opening in 2015.
The Director’s Encounter with the Microscope
Personally, I recognized its necessity even during my time as an employed dentist. I purchased a microscope out of my own pocket for the clinic where I worked and trained with it daily.
Dental equipment can broadly be divided into two types:
- Equipment that can be used immediately upon introduction (intraoral scanners, 3D printers, lasers, face scanners, etc.)
- Equipment requiring training to master (microscopes, CADIAX, etc.)
The microscope falls into the latter category.
The microscope falls into the latter category; not everyone can achieve effective results immediately. That’s precisely why I actively practiced extensively even during my time as an employed dentist.
The Scope of Microscope Applications
The most common use is root canal treatment (treatment of the tooth’s nerve).
Root canal treatment is a precise procedure performed on a tooth-by-tooth basis, making it an excellent match for the microscope.
However, applying it to a broader range of treatments—such as cavity fillings, surgical procedures, prosthetics, and implants—requires additional techniques for maneuverability and positioning.
Because I wanted to “use the microscope for as many treatments as possible,” I continued my training. By the time I opened my practice, I had even introduced a system (Carina DVP2) that instantly shows patients video treatment records.
Our Practice Style — Utilizing Microscopes Even for Insurance-Covered Treatments
Among clinics that fully utilize microscopes, it’s not uncommon for all treatments to be out-of-pocket.
However, at our clinic, we believe patients should invest in areas that truly add value, such as ceramics, orthodontics, implants, and regenerative therapy.
Therefore,
- cavity treatment
- root canal treatment
- extractions
and other treatments covered by insurance are also actively performed using the microscope.
This approach has remained unchanged for the 10 years since opening.
