Why I’ve Continued Using Microscopes for 10 Years, Even in Insurance-Covered Treatments
Is the Perception of Non-Insurance Treatments Prevalent?
I often hear from local residents:
“Does this clinic only offer non-insurance treatments?”
Admittedly, first-time visitors might be surprised.
The reception area features the latest equipment, and the clinic boasts a sophisticated design.
We explain treatments using photos and videos on large monitors and offer a wide range of options like ceramics, digital dentistry, hybrid orthodontics, implants, and periodontal regenerative therapy. Many of these proposals are likely unfamiliar to patients from other clinics.
However, the vast majority of treatments we actually perform on a daily basis are covered by insurance.
Maintaining Quality Even with Insurance Coverage
For example, the reasons patients often visit a dental clinic include:
- Toothache
- Chipped tooth
- Discolored tooth
- swollen
- loose teeth
We address all these symptoms within the scope of insurance-covered treatment.
Moreover, at our clinic, we always perform procedures under a microscope and routinely use rubber dam isolation, even for insurance-covered treatments.
Why this level of commitment?
The reality is that many clinics don’t use microscopes or omit rubber dam isolation for insurance-covered treatments.
The reasons are simple:
- Insurance-covered treatments don’t yield sufficient profit margins
- and they need to differentiate themselves from private-pay treatments
.
However, I feel this is unfair.
Treatment outcomes prove it
In fact, the success rate of the root canal treatments (nerve treatments) I perform under insurance coverage is over 90%.
Of course, a certain number of cases cannot be cured by root canal treatment alone and require surgical procedures.
But even those can be performed within the scope of insurance coverage.
If I were only considering the clinic’s profits, my treatment style might seem foolish.
But I believe this is the right approach.
My Treatment Philosophy
- Even with insurance-covered treatments, I give my full effort to patients in need.
- On top of that, I present options not covered by insurance (such as ceramics or implants) when necessary.
I believe this stance is fair and builds trust.
That is precisely why I have continued using a microscope for insurance-covered treatments throughout my 10 years in practice.
Summary
- Our clinic may have an “out-of-pocket image,” but all basic treatments are covered by insurance.
- Microscopes and rubber dams are standard equipment even for insurance-covered treatments.
- Our root canal success rate exceeding 90% is the result of this commitment.
- Providing fair medical care for our patients is our guiding principle.
